Section 179 – Tax Break for Software, Like Chempax

Section 179 of the IRS Tax Code provides substantial tax breaks of up to $500,000 to businesses that purchase off-the-shelf software within the 2011 tax year. This tax incentive is set to expire on December 31st. This tax break is very valuable and was created to encourage you to invest in your business. Taking advantage of this tax break will reduce your costs.

For basic eligibility, the software must be financed or purchased outright by you, be used in your business or income-producing activity, have a determinable useful life and be expected to last more than one year. In addition, the software must be readily available for purchase by the general public, be subject to a non-exclusive license and cannot be substantially modified. Read more on Section 179.
