Now in its 9th year, the AFT Platinum Pipe Award recognizes excellence in piping and ducting system modeling using AFT software.
We are pleased to congratulate the winners of the 2013 AFT Platinum Pipe Award! For the first time this year, we have awarded an honorable mention.
Use of Software Features and Model Creativity Winner: Jordan Grose, Beta Machinery Analysis, Canada
was used to solve significant waterhammer occurring after pump trip and check valve closure. Assigned flow junctions were manipulated to make the pressures match at the pump discharge check valves, showing a creative use of the software’s features.
Correlation to Test/Field Data Winner: Michael Martino, Schuyler Engineering, USA
AFT Arrow was used to confirm a previous study indicating that existing medium pressure 40 psig steam supply could be converted to a low pressure 12 psig system at Rockland Psychiatric Center. Model predictions were compared to pressure measurements at the most distant buildings and predictions were within 5% of measurements.
Correlation to Test/Field Data Honorable Mention: Stephen Williams, Ameren Missouri, USA
AFT Fathom was used to assist with the selection of new temperature control valves for the auxiliary cooling water heat exchangers (previous system worked poorly) at Ameren Sioux Energy Center. The system was high flow, low pressure drop, so pressure drops needed to be accurately modeled. Many valves were tested in the model and no single valve could cover the range of operation required, resulting in the selection of two parallel valves.
Operational Benefits and Sustainability Winner: William Allred, EI and Joseph Dietz, PE, Reynolds, Smith and Hills, Inc., USA
was used to develop a new, economical Launch Water System (LWS) around the existing system minimizing additional infrastructure due to strict environmental sensitivity at SLC-9.
Each project will be highlighted in an issue of the AFT Pipeline over the next 4 months. After which, summaries will available at https://www.aft.com/platinum-pipe-award.
