Surge tanks are open vessels used to mitigate surge in low pressure systems. Instead of continuing throughout the system and causing potential damage, the surge is partially dissipated by raising or lowering the liquid level in the surge tank.

allows the user to model nearly any shape or size surge tank. The surge tank model can also be defined with a short connector pipe, flow restrictor, as a one-way surge tank, or as a dipping tube vessel – a sort of hybrid between a surge tank and a gas accumulator.

With these options, surge tanks can be properly sized, located, and configured with the help of AFT Impulse.
