The Challenge
The Lewis Chemical Company is a batch chemical manufacturer producing hundreds of SKUs across multiple product lines. For years, in-process QC checks, from raw material receiving through final batch production, were captured entirely on paper documents.
The problem wasn't the data. It was what happened to it after.
"Once that data's captured, it becomes isolated. It's in a file. So with that being in a file, you have no ability to look at trends," said Zach Raiford, Senior Vice President at Lewis Chemical. "If we had any questions on a batch or if we were looking at improving processes, we would have to go pull all those batch records, manually enter them to look at trends. And it's time wasted."
With final COAs captured in Datacor ERP but no digital system connecting in-process QC data, the lab had no way to analyze patterns across raw materials, production vessels, or batch cycles — leaving quality improvement largely reactive.
Why BLISS LIMS
Lewis Chemical evaluated their options with one clear priority: stay within the Datacor ecosystem. No bolt-on platforms. No toggling between disconnected systems.
"The main reason why we really focused on the BLISS LIMS system is that we do not want to have a bunch of bolt-on platforms. We don't want to use external platforms. We're looking to stay within the Datacor system, where we can integrate the BLISS LIMS and SQC+ into the ERP, so we're not in and out of different programs."
After reviewing the program and going through demonstrations, the decision was clear. "We felt that it was the best fit for us and to keep the continuity between all aspects of our business in one program."
What They Expect to Gain
For The Lewis Chemical lab team, the immediate win is workflow. Sample submissions tied directly to lot numbers and batch records. Scheduled testing is built-in. In-process QC data captured digitally and available for trend analysis, without anyone manually re-entering a thing.
"I believe our lab is fully invested in this product. It will make their life much easier... I think it'll make their day-to-day workflow much easier, more consistent."
But the bigger picture is competitive. In batch chemical manufacturing, quality is the differentiator.
"The final deciding factor for the BLISS LIMS system is quality. It's purely about the quality. Our competitors could get a head start on us... they may be running a LIMS system, but we want to have the top-notch quality in our industry, and this is going to help us get there."
